Nola: aluminum alloy geodesic domes for environmental rehabilitation

Nola - Naples

Aluminum alloy geodesic domes for environmental rehabilitation works of the water treatment plant of Nola

The project relates to the intervention works for environmental rehabilitation of the water treatment plant and network of collectors in the area of Nola, in the province of Naples.

The assignment included the consulting activities for the architectural, structural design and supervision works, as well as assistance for the testing operations for the implementation of the roofing of the lifting section and of the primary settling basins. The intervention features the structural design of the roofing of the three existing settling basins in reinforced concrete.

The considerable diameter of the basins (each measuring 44 m) and the lack of intermediate supports, so as to allow the movement of the removing rotating arm, required the use of a "light" material with a high resistance/weight ratio and, at the same time, that cannot be attacked by corrosion, in presence of a highly aggressive environment. We chose to use aluminium alloys, which allow the implementation of geodesic domes, featuring a pleasant architectural impact, owing also to the special shape and to the natural shine of the material.

The domes have been produced by the American company Conservatek Industries Inc and imported and installed by Global Ecology Industria srl, Italian leading company in the implementation and assembly of works in structural aluminium.

Aires Ingegneria has been involved by Conservatek's engineers, for the design of structures, in compliance with the Italian technical standards, as well as with the directives of the “Aluminum Association specifications for Aluminum Structures” and of the ASCE - American Society for Civil Engineering.
