Cattolica: aluminum alloy geodesic domes for Wastewater treatment

Cattolica - Forlì Cesena

Aluminum alloy geodesic domes for Wastewater treatment plant of Cattolica.

The work included the consulting activities for the architectural and structural design and assistance for supervision works for the covers of the sections of primary sedimentation, oxidation, purification within the wastewater plant of Cattolica, Forli-Cesena province.

The intervention has involved in particular the structural design of the roofing of the two existing sedimentation basins with r.c. structure. The considerable diameter of the basins (measuring 36m diameter) and the lack of intermediate supports, so as to allow the movement of the removing rotating arm, has required the use of a “light” material with a high resistance/weight ratio and, at the same time, that cannot be attacked by corrosion, in presence of a highly aggressive environment.

We chose to use aluminium alloys structures, which allow the implementation of geodesic domes, featuring a pleasant architectural impact, owing also to the special shape and to the natural shine of the material. The domes have been produced by the American company "Conservatek Industries Inc" and imported and installed by "Global Ecology Industria srl", Italian leading company in this sector.

Aires Ingegneriahas been involved by Conservatek's engineers, for the design of structures, in compliance with the Italian technical standards, as well as with the directives of the “Aluminum Association specifications for Aluminum Structures” and of the ASCE - American Society for Civil Engineering.

The construction phase was completed in a few months thanks to the assembly on the ground and the subsequent lifting of the structure.
