School “G. Siani” Villaricca Napoli: seismic retrofitting

Villaricca - Naples | Italy

Seismic retrofit of an existing school building “G. Siani” in Villaricca (Naples)

The project involved the seismic retrofit of the school building located in Villaricca, Naples province. The school complex consists of three buildings. The dimensional characteristics of the complex are as follows: covered area 1300 sqm., total floor area 3500 sqm., gross volume 17,000 cbm.

The structure of the main building is in tuff masonry; the structures of the secondary buildings, gymnasium and classrooms, are in reinforced concrete.

Previously to the design phase, a campaign of tests and inspections on the structures was carried out in order to obtain an Adeguate Level of knowledge (named "LC2"). The Non Destructive Tests carried out were for example: flat jack tests on masonry; Schmidt rebound hammer test; inspections with electromagnetic techniques; ultrasonic tests; infrared thermography; compressive strength test and carbonation tests on concrete cores;tensile strength test on steel samples.

The main features of the project consisted in : the new structural steel roof; strengthening of masonry with the injection of fluid mortars and adhesives; confinement of masonry openings by means of steel encircling frames; strengthening of existing concrete floor slabs by means of in-plane steel bracing and relevant details of brace-to-wall connection; strengthening of r.c. columns and beams by means of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CRFP) re-covering.

AIRES Ingegneria has developed the design stages jointly with Prof. Engr. Claudio Cristilli, Professor of Engineering Technology at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Naples "Federico II".
