Hospital Complex “Massa e Carrara”: Seismic vulnerability assessment

Carrara | Italy

Seismic vulnerability assessment of Hospital Complex located in Massa e Carrara

The assignment regards the assessment of the seismic vulnerability of the buildings of the Massa and Carrara Hospital, including the hospital complex of "Monterosso" and the complex of the "Civico".

The buildings that make up the hospital complex of "Monterosso" dated from the period between 1914 and 1930 and are built by not squared limestone masonry structure. As for the main body of the Civico complex, it was built in 1876.

The knowledge of the structures was achieved with accurate survey operations, historical research and materials testing. The geological and geo-technical characterization of the subsurface was performed by means of surveys consisting of continuous core up to a depth of 30 m, SPT in-hole penetration tests, Down-Hole in-hole seismic surveys.

Analysis of the seismic vulnerability of the buildings was performed using Non-linear Static Analysis for the evaluation of overall behaviour and Linear Kinematic Analysis for the response in respect of local masonry wall collapse mechanisms.
